Damon Evans Address Jeff Capel Reports

Roger Clarkson of the Athens Banner-Herald talked with Damon Evans about yesterday's reports that Jeff Capel may be a candidate for the head basketball job and the rumors of a $2 million per year salary for the prospective new coach.

Damon wouldn't specifically say that anyone is a candidate, and he couldn't be pinned down on the dollar figures.  Here's the most interesting part of what he did say:

"I am committed to the basketball program and we are willing to pay what we think is a competitive salary based on the qualifications of the applicant," Evans said. "What that is will depend on the applicant, and we are willing to pay what we think is appropriate."

Evans has not been reluctant to spend money on basketball since he took over in 2004. Georgia opened a $30 million practice facility for men's and women's basketball and gymnastics in 2007.

A $2 million yearly salary would rank third in the Southeastern Conference after Florida's Billy Donovan ($3.25 million per year) and Kentucky's Billy Gillispie ($2.36 million).

That's about all Damon can really say at this time.  It's a good read.
