2012 UGA Football Schedule Rumors

The SEC announced today that they won't be finished with the 2012 football schedule until after Christmas. With that in mind, here's the UGA football schedule as I'm projecting based on the rumors and rumblings:

Week 1: Buffalo (home)
Week 2: Missouri (away)
Week 3: Florida Atlantic (home)
Week 4: Vanderbilt (home)
Week 5: Tennessee (home)
Week 6: South Carolina (away)
Week 7: Kentucky (away)
Week 8: BYE Week
Week 9: Florida (Jax)
Week 10: Alabama (home)
Week 11: Auburn (away)
Week 12: Georgia Southern (home)
Week 13: Georgia Tech (home)

There's a chance we could see Bama at home in Week 8 before the Cocktail Party with the bye week after Florida, but that's not what I heard earlier this week. This is all still fluid to some degree so you could see even more changes. However, this is the latest as of yesterday's rumor mill.

The games that are either confirmed or darn close to being confirmed are Buffalo, Missouri, FAU, Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech. Given that Ole Miss appears to be playing Florida and Missouri from the SEC East next year, it looks very likely that Georgia does get Bama...at home.

UPDATE: Various other media outlets are saying that UGA will play Ole Miss at home in Week 10 instead of Alabama. That would be great, but I'm struggling with the conflicting Ole Miss rumors which have them playing:

Missouri and Vandy
or Florida and Vandy
or Missouri and Florida
or UGA and Vandy

I had projected earlier this offseason that we'd get Ole Miss and Aubrn as our Western Teams. I would prefer to have been right then....than the post above.

2012 Schedule Rumor: UGA vs. Bama in Athens

The SEC is a near mortal lock to operate with an 8 game SEC schedule in 2012. As I've said numerous times, this will be temporary before the SEC ultimate goes to a 9 game schedule in 2-4 years.

With that in mind, we had been projecting that UGA would drop a road game at Bama from the 2012 UGA schedule in favor of a road game at Missouri. With the new 6-1-1 divisional rotation, this seemed to make the most sense and have the smallest impact on everyone involved. In that scenario, UGA's SEC West opponents would be Auburn (road) and Ole Miss (home).

However, we've hit a snag. PowerMizzou is reporting that Missouri's SEC West schedule will include Ole Miss (road) and Texas A&M (home). This means, Ole Miss is off the table to come to Athens.

Billy Lucci of TexasAgs.com is reporting that Texas A&M's SEC East opponents will be Missouri (permanent) and Florida. Mr. SEC is reporting that Tennessee's SEC West opponents will be Bama (permanent) and Mississippi State next year. (He also theorizes on some other match-ups which aren't a done deal).

If the rumors above are correct, Ole Miss, Miss State and Texas A&M are off the table as rotational opponents for UGA next year. That only leaves Alabama, Arkansas and LSU as options. More than likely, it looks like Bama will be coming to Athens.

However, Bama doesn't have an SEC road game to give. That means some other SEC West opponent will be swapping home/away dates with Bama next year. I project that type of movement is already in the cards for the MSU vs. UK game (which will likely stay in Lexington in 2012). As well as the Vandy vs. Ole Miss game which will likely be in Nashville again this year.

More than likely, it would be Arkansas going back to Tuscaloosa in 2012. Again...this all assumes the first 3 leaks are correct.

The problem with an 8 game SEC schedule

I think it was Tony Barnhart who originally said a year or two ago that a 14 team league playing 8 conference games wasn't really a conference at all. It was two federations with a title game.

By going with a 6-1-1 rotation where we keep the Auburn game alive every year, Georgia would play Alabama twice every 12 years. We'd only get them at home once over that period.

Consider our series with Clemson. In 1987, Georgia stopped playing Clemson on an annual basis. We booked two year deals with them in '90-'91, '94-'95, '02-'03 and '13-14. Let's ignore the future dates for a moment.

From 1988-2011, we faced Clemson six times (3 at home) over a 24 year period. Applying the 14 team, 8 league game model to the past would mean that we would have faced Alabama 4 times during that same period. Only twice at home. Same with LSU.

Rotational Models:

• 5-2-1: Used by the SEC from '92-'01 while at 12 teams. This model meant your four non-permanent opponents only came to Athens once every 8 years.
  
• 5-1-2: Used by the SEC from '02-Today. Your five non-permanent opponents come to Athens once every five years.
  
• 6-1-1: Proposed model for a 14 team league playing 8 games. You get the 6 non-permanent opponents at home once every 12 years.
  
• 6-1-2: A 14 team model that brings non-permanent opponents to Athens once every six years. Not noticeably different than today.

SEC saying it will stick to 8 league games

The SEC's PR folks said today there has been no discussion about moving to nine conference games. You can take from that one of three things:

A. The SEC really doesn't want to schedule tougher games and South Carolina's president didn't know what he was talking about when he said 9 games was the end destination.

B. The SEC wants to push for 8 games and give the 9th game up in contract renegotiation with its TV partners. Basically, the talk is just negotiation tactics.

C. Option B is true, and the SEC will end up at 9. However, it wants 8 games for the next two years to lessen the buyout requirements for future previously scheduled future games.

I'm going with option B. If we play 8 league games next year, we're almost definitely dropping Bama for a road game at Missouri. The only way that wouldn't happen would be as part of a larger reshuffling which moves our "home" game vs. UF to odd numbered years from its current even numbered years. That sounds easy, but it's a change that would involve more than just UGA and UF.

Must Win?

Just thinking about the Boise State game vs. South Carolina game: Which is more important?

I'd say South Carolina. I'd also say Boise State is a more dangerous opponent than South Carolina.  What if we lose a close game (say, like what VaTech did with a last second thing) to Boise State, then whip South Carolina?  What if we get blown out by Boise, then whip South Carolina?  What if the reverse happens?

I know how I'd feel about each of those, but how would that go down with the fan base?

Advice Needed: Georgia vs. Florida Game Water Taxi?

Dawgnoxious and I are thinking of ditching our long standing Adams Street tailgate spot in favor of pre-gaming at a local bar and then going to the game via Water Taxi. We'd rather not drive to or from the stadium.

So my question is...how do we do that? Who do I talk to? What websites can you guys hook me up with?

We're staying in Deerwood Park this year which is east of the River. For those not familiar with the city, we're South of the stadium on I-95 between the interstate and the beach.

We're game for partying anywhere east/south of the stadium near a water taxi location. Ideally, there would be a lot of other Dawg fans tailgating with us. And we don't want to fight traffic to get to the bar...ideally.

A Season Opener in the Georgia Dome?

Last night, Damon Evans said that he'd like open a future season in the Georgia Dome as part of the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic. He obviously wasn't talking about this season, but he is interested in a future date.

Considering the game is booked for 2010 and 2012, the next obvious slot available is 2011. Unfortunately, we have the pointless series with Louisville starting in Week 1 of that season.

The next available seasons where we could play a neutral site game and still maintain at least six home games in 2014 and 2016. Of those, 2016 is the most appealing to me because we dodge Bama and LSU those years. Well...actually...the most appealing option is playing there in 2011 and dumping Louisville.

I'm all for appearing in that game.

Of Clemson and Spring Football

Kyle King is all about playing Clemson in 2013. I am too, but I don't get why we're playing Clemson (2013/2014) and Oregon (2015, 2016) the same cycled home and home years as Georgia Tech. In other words, we're on the road at GT and Clemson in '13 and on the road at Oregon and GT in '15. That's the opposite of the way we've scheduled most of our other big OCC games since 2002 (Ok State aside).

I'm also in agreement with Blutarsky that the idea of playing Clemson in a Spring exhibition would also be fun. I will add to his take that we already do this with Clemson in Basketball. The NCAA allows for one closed scrimmage (no fans and no media) between schools per year, and UGA has elected to pair up with Clemson 3-4 times over the past few years. The match-ups started with Felton and Purnell as they were old friends, and it continued this year between Fox and Purnell.

I see little value in playing Clemson more than one series per decade in football (regular season). Mainly because it benefits them more than us in terms of in state recruiting. However, I'd like to see us play them every year for the rest of eternity in basketball. The old football mentality of "Clemson is an enemy" helps fill seats for basketball. And seat filling regional games would be a huge asset to basketball.

A Modest Proposal for Damon Evans

Regardless of the outcome of Saturday's game, I have a modest proposal for Damon Evans to consider that would alter the Georgia schedule with respect to Georgia Tech. Put simply, this game is not really a rivalry and Georgia would benefit from not playing it every year. Yeah, I know, Tech won last year. And if they win tomorrow, it still wouldn't change a thing. This series is a bore and typically irrelevant on the national scene. A victory over Tech delivers all the satisfaction of a win over Vanderbilt. Some UGA fans say Tech is our rival, but that tells me they are either very, very old, or are confusing the burning shame of losing to an inferior program with a "rivalry." (Ask yourself when was the last time you celebrated a win over Tech) Losing to Tech is like getting beat up by a retarded kid your kid brother, but that doesn't make the kid your rival. It just makes you lame for losing.


The precedent for not playing an in-state Div. 1 team every year has already been set by the Penn State/Pitt series. I think the Penn State/Pitt series is a good model for us to follow because (i) though dominated by Pitt/Tech in the era preceding the face mask and forward pass, it is now heavily lop-sided in favor of Penn State/UGA; (ii) the schools play in different conferences so they don't have to play each other; (iii) in most years during the BCS-era, Pitt/Tech drags down Penn State/UGA's strength of schedule; (iv) and Pitt/Tech plays in a stadium substantially smaller than Penn State/UGA so fans who would otherwise attend the game can't attend.

Despite sporadic victories in the last twenty years (some of which were cheating-assisted), the series hasn't been competitive in many of our lifetimes. UGA leads the overall series by an overwhelming 59-37-5 advantage. But consider more than twenty of Tech's wins came prior to 1957. The last time Tech won by more than two touchdowns, you were allowed to smoke on an airplane. Now look at these results by decade:

• 1960s: 6-4 UGA
• 1970s: 7-3 UGA
• 1980s: 7-3 UGA
• 1990s: 7-3 UGA
• 2000s: 7-2 UGA
  

The Penn State/Pitt rivalry went dormant when Pitt rejected a 2-1 series that would require Pitt to play in State College twice for a return trip by Penn State. That kind of model would work for UGA. A 2-1 would be better for our fans who can't squeeze into the Joke by the Coke. Tech would probably veto that idea (just as Pitt did), so playing a few times a decade could be a fall back position.

Predictably, Tech backers would squall about what a terrible idea this is (just like Pitt backers did), but I don't think most UGA fans would really care if this game wasn't played every year. Despite Tech's win last year, this game has become an afterthought for many UGA fans. It remains the case that when Tech wins this game, it means there are serious problems with the UGA football program. As the recent decades results above demonstrate, Tech wins are as rare as hen's teeth. That's not the kind of competitiveness that constitutes a rivalry.

Let me pre-empt the techsters who will no doubt flame this post. [sidebar: isn't it pitiful that tech fans read this blog to get the validation of a provoked response? I would have to google a tech blog, assuming there are any] The Georgia-Florida series is currently lop-sided, but (a) Georgia leads the all-time series, and (b) it is a Southeastern conference game, so it isn't analogous.

I also add that superduperoffensivegeeeeeeen-ius Paul Johnson agrees that this is just another game. I give him credit for seeing how pathetic it is that Tech defines their existence through the prism of this game. Johnson knows he has his work cut out for him (until he leaves for Nebraska): "They're in the state. I understand all that. But it's not going to define our year if we beat Georgia. I'm trying to build a football program here."

So to Damon I say: Give CPJ a few years to "build a program" and we can decide if it's worth our time to play them regularly again.

The SEC announced kickoff times for these games:

My original expectation was that UGA would host Auburn at noon on CBS. However, you could easily have 6-4 Auburn vs. 5-4 Georgia. That doesn't sound much like an CBS game. Our combined failings could push the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry to ESPN or ESPN2. Leaving CBS to take Alabama vs. Mississippi State.* That would be fine by me.

It also wouldn't shock me to see a 6 Day Option used by one of the networks for the 14th.

UGA to have a bye week before the 2011 Cocktail Party?

RedStripe over at SicEmDawgs.com does a good job with future football schedule tracking. A few weeks ago, he found that Mississippi State announced some future dates for 2011. The implications of their announcement suggest that Georgia likely has an open date before the 2011 Georgia/Florida game.

It's possible that we'll play Kentucky that week like we're doing in 2010, but it seems more likely that the SEC wants to alternate bye weeks for UGA and/or Florida going forward. No team should have a bye week every single year. It's competitively unbalanced.

It'll also be nice to have 7 home games in 2011 for only the 2nd time since league expansion in 1992. The other years were 2002 and 2006.

One of the things we try and do here at the Georgia Sports Blog is help out with road game travel plans when we can. With that in mind, I wanted to let you know that many Boulder Hotels for the 2010 Georgia Bulldogs vs. Colorado Buffaloes game are now open for booking.

The game is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010 according to the UGA Media Guide. Here's a sampling of some of the hotel rates I've found along with distance from the stadium per Google Maps: (UPDATE: All the prices have changed. Call the hotels)

There are other places that are fairly close, but I gave you recommendations (except for the Quality Inn) for the types of places I stay when I'm on the road with the Dawgs.

I travel a lot for work, and I don't like staying in 2 star hotels. If you want to stay at the Best Western or Ramada Inn in a college town, you're more than welcome. But I'm not. There's actually a Best Western very close to campus, but I didn't research it. I typically stay at a Hampton Inn for personal travel. In fact, there is a Hampton Inn in Boulder for about $110, but it's located about 6+ miles away so I didn't bother to link given the other properties nearby.

This trip, I'm staying at the Boulder Marriott because I love walking to the stadium for road games. The trip to Tempe spoiled me in regards to walking to the game. I only listed the Google Map distances from the stadium. A search from whatever bar district (if any) they have would likely also be useful, but I didn't check into that. The rates were based on my best efforts as of Monday, Oct. 19.

The team hotel is unlikely to be in Boulder. They usually stay further out than that, but I didn't bother checking.

As for air travel, I'm going to wait until the NFL announces the 2010 Football Schedule before booking anything. I wouldn't mind sticking around Sunday and watching Knowshon and Champ play if the Broncos have a home game that weekend.

UGA vs. GT in the Georgia Dome to open the 2011 season?

Damon Evans says that UGA and Tech are in very preliminary discussions with the Georgia Dome to open the 2011 season.

The Positives:

• Tech would essentially be giving up a home game as the Dawgs would have dramatically more fans at the game.
  
• The pay day would be nice for the athletic department.
  
• We would have all off season to get ready for the triple option.

The Negative:

• Tech's greatest systemic program weakness is depth. One of the advantages we have in the series is the timing. By playing them late in the season, they are historically thinner on the lines of scrimmage and at other key positions. They beat Auburn twice and Notre Dame once in the season openers a few years ago.

I'm not a fan of the idea because the negative is an enormous issue. It didn't help us last year as Tech's OL and Nesbitt were both beat to pieces. However, taking the long view, depth late in the season is a huge problem for Tech historically. They can get 22 very solid players, but that second team depth has been their undoing.

And honestly...the Tech fan base is never going to go for this. The idea of giving UGA an additional 15-20k tickets for their "home" game just isn't going to happen.

2010 Georgia at UK: Bring on the Ponies!

The Georgia Bulldogs will play the Kentucky Wildcats on Oct. 23, 2010 in Lexington. Moving the game forward to late October brings it back into prime horse racing season at Keeneland. From 1956-2002, Georgia always played Kentucky in late October. Over the decades, many Dawg fans like myself enjoyed the Friday and sometimes Saturday trip to the track. It was one of the best road trips in the SEC.

When the Kentucky game moved to mid-November in '03, we lost the only compelling thing about the UK trip. Without a day at the track, it's just a long drive to a vanilla stadium to typically watch misplaced Big 10 fans sit on their hands while the Dawgs typically beat them. We went 21-4 in Lexington during that '56-'02 stretch.

The other upside of moving the game means that it forces the SEC West rotational opponent games up to September or the first week in October, and it moves a non-conference cupcake game back to November. Essentially, it gives us two bye weeks in November. One off week and one week against a likely Div I-AA team to rest up.

More importantly, the extra November home game will help break up the 4 consecutive SEC road game problem we faced in 2004 and 2008. I'd love a bye week before the Florida game, but it's much more important to not play4 consecutive games away from home.

In 2010, we have open slots on Nov. 6th and the week before the Tech game. One will be filled with a power puff game while the other will be a bye.

When I was confirming that this wasn't a typo in the media guide, I also asked if the move of the UK game to October was permanent. The person I asked didn't know. This could just be a one year thing to help avoid the 4 in a row problem.

Regardless, I'm thankful both for a trip to the track...and that I don't have to do a Starkville to Jacksonville to Lexington to Auburn four game swing next year. That's hell on those of us who actually travel to all the road games.

We'll see what the long term schedule implications later.

Georgia Bulldogs 2009 Football Tickets

Our Stubhub affiliate relationship is back up and running, and they have some interesting tickets seats available. (UPDATE: I updated the prices on Aug. 21st)

All Home Games - Georgia Season Tickets
Season ticket packages start at $595 each in the 300-level. Adjusted face value (tickets + required contribution) in that section start at roughly $500 if you bought them from the Athletic Department. That's not a bad deal. I saw a lower level at $645.

Sept. 5 - UGA at Oklahoma State Cowboys
Face value for this game is $100. Tickets start at $85 (via auction). The official Ok State seating chart says the Visitors sections are 201, 301, part of 302, 120, 228 and 334.

Sept. 12 - South Carolina Gamecocks at UGA
Ticket start at $105 each. You don't have to worry about buying student tickets this year. There aren't any. They are putting the ticket on the student's ID. The ID is the ticket. Now, you don't have to worry about accidentally buying a student ticket.

Sept. 19 - UGA at Arkansas Razorbacks
Tickets start at $82. According to the Arkansas official seating chart, the visitors sections are 111, 509-512 and 516-519.

Sept. 26 - Arizona State Sun Devils at UGA
Tickets in the 300 level start at $96 each. That's roughly what it cost a UGA fan to attend the ASU game last year....of course that covered our entire season ticket fees. If you're an ASU fan looking for the ASU sections, it'll be most of the 600 level plus parts of 101-103 and 301-302. That's not guaranteed, but that's pretty darn close.

Oct. 3 - LSU Tigers at UGA
Football tickets start at $145. LSU fans check the ASU note to see where the visitors section at Sanford stadium is typically located. Like I said...that's a pretty good estimate.

Oct. 10 - UGA at Tennessee Volunteers
Tickets start at $111. The official UT site doesn't have this year's visitor section clearly marked. However, I've been every time since '95, and it's about the same place. UGA's band typically sits around Z14 or Z15. We typically get a few really low rows in Section A and a big chunk of AA. Then we get the Top 5-10 rows of GG-NN (give or take). I prefer sitting in Y9 - Z15 in the lower endzone. That's a mix of UGA and UT fans. The closer you get to Z15, the more UGA it is. If the Vols lose to UCLA, the ticket prices may come down. If they win, I'd wager they go up.

Oct. 17 - UGA at Vanderbilt Commodores
Tickets start at $51. Let's be honest. You can wait, It'll get lower than that.

Oct. 24 - Idle

Oct. 31 - UGA vs. Florida Gators (Jacksonville)
Tickets are still comically high, and I don't know which side is the UGA side yet. Once that gets sorted out, I'll provide more info.

Nov. 7 - Tennessee Tech at UGA
Prices currently start at $65/each. Obviously, well below face value. But there are some premium lower level sideline seats available for $65-90.

Nov. 14 - Auburn Tigers at UGA
Tickets start at $138 for tickets to the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry.

Nov. 21 - Kentucky Wildcats at UGA
Tickets start at $80 for the last game of the 2009 regular season in Athens, Ga.

Nov. 28 - UGA at Georgia Tech
Football tickets start at $125. The athletic department lists the "official" visitor's sections as 130, 131, 221, 201, 208, and 210-218. Now, you and I both know that we're going to have 20,000 UGA fans there just like always. So you'll have Dawgs near you as long as you don't sit in their student sections 132-136 and 113-119.

Ticket prices on Stubhub are fluid because it's a marketplace where fans like you are selling to other fans. I used Stubhub last year to get premium tickets to an event out of state and had a great time.

Like I always say, aftermarket ticket sites aren't for everyone. Some people just want to pay face value for tickets. Some people will arrive at a game without tickets and deal with the hassle of scalpers. Me...I like to know that I have tickets before I get to town so that I can spend game day eating, drinking and talking smack. Not tracking down a good deal. But hey...that's just me.

There's no such thing as a sell out.

UNC vs. LSU at the Georgia Dome in 2010

Tony Barnhart says that LSU and UNC are very close to facing each other to open the season in 2010. The Chick-fil-A College Kickoff at the Georgia Dome would host the game. The other games in the series...

2008 - Alabama vs. Clemson
2009 - Alabama vs. Virginia Tech
2010 - LSU vs. UNC
2011 - TBD
2012 - Tennessee at NC State

The Atlanta Sports Council is still looking for a 2011 game. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs schedule is full for 2011; although, I still say that could be fixed by dropping the pointless and incredibly unappealing series with Louisville. Without shuffling the schedule around dramatically or moving to a 5 game home schedule (which won't happen), Georgia can't play in the game until 2016.
