Trev Alberts' picks for UGA vs. UF

Trev picks the Dawgs because of Stafford and the running game. Only Leonard Postosties picked against UGA fewer times than Trev. God bless them both.

UGA and Knowshon Pumpkins

I was asked earlier in the week about this. I only got three responses, but they are really good. Here they are.

The first one comes from the guys at BloggingPantsless. They have instructions up for how they made their Knowshon Moreno pumpkin.

Along that same Knowshon Pumpkin path, there's this one from Laura R. I assume you would go about making the stencil pretty much the same way the Pantsless guys did. Just use the opposite cutting technique.

The G comes from Jenn W. of Dacula.

Thanks for sending these in.

The Urban Meyer Interview

In the spirit of Orson's interview with Richt and The Fairness Doctrine, the Florida Gator Sports Information Department arranged* for a one on one interview with Urban Meyer.

He really broke out of his typical standard answers mold, and opened up to us**.

The Urban Meyer Interview

PWD: Coach, What has the been the key to your success at Florida?

Meyer: Alex Smith was a first round draft pick in our system. That's important to remember.

PWD: Huh?

Meyer: [Points and stares at the picture of Smith on draft day.]

PWD: When you look at your offensive line's progress what excites you the most?

Meyer: Tim Tebow plays with great heart. He understands our system, and he really maximizes his ability. He's everything we want Florida Gators to stand for.

PWD: Including circumcising people who aren't protected by standard American laws which frown upon surgery by unlicensed non-medical professionals?

Meyer: Filipino circumcisions are a bad deal. The Gator Nation will never forget the media attack on Tim from that mission trip. What Tim did for those orphans was really a magical gift. Urban Meyer has recently investigated having his own foreskin re-attached so that Tim can remove it again. It's something I would never forget.

PWD: I could really do without that visual.

Meyer: [Points and stares at his own lap.]

PWD: Ok. What happened in the Ole Miss loss?

Meyer: We have some players who haven't bought in. They're mostly 5th year seniors who were recruited by the prior coaching staff. Obviously, those young men are holding back all the righteous, workaholics that Urban Meyer brought to Gainesville.

PWD: Speaking of talent. How do you think your skill positions stack up to Georgia's?

Meyer: Herschel Walker was a good back for that team north of here, but he obviously lacks the speed of Chris Rainey.

PWD: I was thinking more along the lines of Knowshon Moreno, AJ Green and Matt Stafford.

Meyer: Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow.

PWD: Speaking of Rainey. He has had some colorful quotes in the press. Do any of his quotes make you uncomfortable?

Meyer: Urban Meyer is not ready to say that he's unhappy. Chris says that he likes white girls. Who doesn't? We teach discipline and commitment here at Florida. Chris made his decision in that area, and he's sticking with it. That's what the old guy teaches in Gainesville. He's not the only one who's glad he's Chris Rainey.

PWD: On the other side of the ball, has your pass defense really improved or have you simply not played a quality passing quarterback yet?

Meyer: We've played lots of quality quarterbacks. Obviously none of them were as good as Tim Tebow, who won a Heisman here, or Alex Smith, who I coached into a first round QB, but they've had the ability to throw the ball...places.

PWD: Has Tim Tebow reached his full potential?

Meyer: He's not going to like Urban Meyer saying this, but Louis Murphy can get a lot better. He is still learning how to play wide receiver. He can get a lot better.

PWD: But the question was about Tim Tebow.

Meyer: Tim has to work on his technique to minimize scarring and preserve the nerve endings for maximum sensation.

PWD: I meant as a quarterback. Will Tim be back for his senior year?

Meyer: The poor you will always have with you, and whenever you want you can do good for them. But you will not always have Tim Tebow.

PWD: That's unfortunate, because I thought he was the best four-loss quarterback in the country last year.

Meyer: Before the rooster crows, you will deny him twice more.

PWD: Do you plan to institute a assault gun ban for your team?

Meyer: Urban Meyer does not plan to curtail his players' Second Amendment right to "pop a late field goal with a 20-point lead in someone's ass," metaphorically speaking.

PWD: Thanks for your time, coach.

Meyer: Tim Tebow is NOT a system quarterback.

*No they didn't.
**Nope. That that either.

SEC Power Poll Ballot

1. Alabama - Beat Tennessee and made them like it, well, made the few Vol fans that stuck around like it.
2. Florida - The Gators look really scary, but UK didn't exactly mount much resistance.  With vengeance on their minds, the lizards slink into Jacksonville for the biggest Cocktail party in ages.
3. Georgia -Exposed a surprisingly error-prone LSU team with big play after big play.  That offense has to show up in Jacksonville to keep pace with the Gators.
4. LSU -It's easy to say the Tigers need a better quarterback, but quarterbacks aren't blowing pass coverages and missing tackles.
5. South Carolina - Shiny Pants gets a chance to kick Phil while he's down.  Don't expect him to hold back.
6. Ole Miss - Got out of Fayetteville with a win.  Beat Auburn and you can make reservations for Nashville, Memphis, or Shreveport.
7. Vanderbilt-Does losing to Duke erase all of the goodwill Vandy built up this year?  I don't think so, but they need to be solid for the rest of the year to get to a bowl.  If you can lose to Duke, you can lose to UK or UT.
8. Kentucky -It's hard to find anything redeeming when you give up 63 at home.
9. Mississippi State -This weekend is a must win for the Dogs if they want to get bowl eligible.
10.  Arkansas -Michael Smith is racking up the yards, but the Hawgs will need even more offense to keep up with Tulsa.
11. Tennessee - A season that tries the collective orange soul.  It seems a foregone conclusion that Phil won't be around next year.  Is an orange jet headed for Durham?
12. Auburn - Is there a more painful M.O. for a fan: get a nice lead then fall completely apart.  Tubs must beat Ole Miss or a bowl game is doubtful.

Gator Hate Week is Upon Us

When the economy is on the skids and the world looks uncertain, I take comfort in falling back on the rock solid truths of life. The truths I've come to know are these:
  • I love College Football.
  • I love Georgia.
  • I love Winning.
  • And I hate the Gators.
It is with these constants that we can rebuild America and move forward together. Now, with that random BS behind us. Check out these links:PWD

Is LSU Fan Getting Soft?

I'm sure experiences varied, but I was shocked at the overwhelming hospitality of the LSU fans, both before and after the game.  I know they are generally a good bunch even if you have to put up with an initial dose of hostility.  In 2003, though, they were vicious.  This year, I had to practically beg LSU fan to even blurt out a "Tiger Bait" in my general direction, despite my red pants.  During the game, the LSU fans were handing me drinks instead of pouring them on my head.  Have those championships made them soft?
From talking with other Georgia fans, my experience was a common one.  What were your impressions of the Tiger faithful?

Scenes from a Beatdown

LSU's hot women are supposedly legendary. And they are hot...maybe not Ole Miss hot, but hot. And then there are the exceptions. And sometimes the exception swallows the rule. (click to enlarge...if you dare)

Go figure: security wants to check "her" ticket stub. Luckily "she" keeps them in the jean shorts under her skirt. Knowing no one would believe me, I obtained photographic evidence. And we know who she's cheering for during the Cocktail Party.

The Blackberry Bandit of Tift County, Liquid Courage, and I had front row seats in Tiger Stadium. For the most part, it rocked. But--momentarily--we couldn't have been more repulsed if we'd come face-to-face with the body of Ray Brower.

The Triplets

In the 90s, "The Triplets" were Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin. In the 2000s, The New Triplets were Peyton Manning, Edgerrin James and Marvin Harrison. This year, Georgia has its own triple barreled explosive combination.

Let's look at the stats for the 2008 Georgia Crew:
  • Knowshon Moreno - Moreno is currently second in the SEC in rushing yards per game at 115.6, and he leads all SEC backs with 12 touchdowns. He is 14th nationally in rushing yards and tied for 6th in TDs nationally.

Across a 13 game season, his numbers project to 1,503 yards and 19 TDs on the ground. The UGA records is 19 rushing TDs by Garrison Hearst in 1992 (in 11 games). The SEC record is 23 by Tim Tebow (in 13 games).

If Moreno averages just 82 yards per game for the rest of the season, he will pass Thomas Brown and Rodney Hampton for 4th place on the career UGA rushing yardage list. He would have to average 152 yards per game to catch Lars Tate for 3rd place on the all-time UGA list (assuming 13 games. If we get to the SEC title game, he would only need 127 yards per game to catch Lars). Granted the seasons are longer now, but that's not too shabby for just two years of work.

  • A.J. Green - AJ has 39 catches for 662 yards and 5 touchdowns. Across the SEC, he is ranked third in receptions per game, first in yards per game and I think he's tied for third in receiving TDs.

Across a 13 game season, his receiving numbers project to 1,075 yards, 8 TDs and 63 receptions. The UGA single season records for yards (1,008 by Terrence Edwards in '02), receptions (76 by Brice Hunter in '93) and receiving TDs (11 by Terrence Edwards in '02) in a season are all within reach for Green. Did I mention he's a freshman?

The Georgia freshman receiving record is 53 catches by Terrence Edwards '99. AJ is already in 2nd place on that list with 39 catches for a rookie. At this rate, he's the heavy favorite for SEC Freshman of the Year and first team All-SEC.

  • Matthew Stafford - Stafford currently leads the SEC in Passing Yards per Game (243.2). He's second in passing efficiency at 145.9, and he's tied for first with 12 passing TDs. His completion percentage is up to 61.7%.

Across a 13 game season, his passing numbers project to 3,162 yards, 19 TDs and 9 INTs.

This Saturday's match-up with Tebow is obviously for the SEC East Championship and the hopes of staying alive in the national title race. But don't forget...it's also a race for first team All-SEC quarterback. Hell...SEC Player of the Year could also be won in Jacksonville by Moreno, Stafford, Tebow or Harvin.
So...is this the best three headed monster in the SEC? Is it the best ever at UGA? The closest comparison I could dream up was the '92 combo of Eric Zeier, Garrison Hearst and Andre Hastings.

Call 800-52POINTS

As Quinton pointed out last week, the LSU fans got access to Knowshon Moreno's phone number this week, and they were wearing it out. Knowshon got his revenge after his 60+ yard TD run that ended in front of the LSU student section. He pointed to them, and gave them a ring. The photo above has a good look at it. The guys at Don't Bet on It have an excellent fark that describes the situation perfectly.

BCS Standings: Georgia now ranked #6

The new BCS Standings are out, and the Georgia Bulldogs are up to 6th from 7th last week. BCS Guru Rick Tellshow has compiled the computer numbers, and he has the Dawgs 4th in the non-human polls. That momentum is fueling our upward overall trajectory.

Brad Edwards of ESPN.com suggests that it will be very tough for Southern Cal to top a 1 loss SEC team without significant help from human pollsters. One spot in the rankings isn't significant help. They would likely need to give the Trojans several spots in the pecking order to get in.

BCS Standings

RkTeamBCS Avg.

22North Carolina0.209
23South Florida0.067

Based on the computer polls, Georgia can possibly over take Southern Cal and Oklahoma to become the top ranked 1 loss team in the country next week. That of course assumes that Texas beats Texas Tech. I'd wager that UT would become the top rated one loss team if they lost to Leach's Pirates of Lubbock.

AP and Coaches Polls are Out; UGA is 8th

The Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Poll are both out, and the Georgia Bulldogs moved up one spot in each to #8. Just as importantly, Southern Cal fell in both poll. They are now 6th in the Coaches Poll instead of their earlier (and more ridiculous) 4th place.

With the Florida Gators sitting at 5th and 7th in the AP and Coaches polls and Texas Tech (6th and 5th) playing Texas this coming weekend, Georgia could jump all the way to 5th with a win at the Cocktail Party. The Trojans are within reach.

The BCS Standings come out around 4:00 on Fox.Or not.

Other Items of Note:
  • Georgia Tech fell out of the Top 25 following their humiliating loss to Virginia. Hmmm...Georgia wins. Tennessee loses. Tech loses. Near perfect weekend if you ask me.
  • Our long national nightmare is over. Ohio State has been spared from the humiliation of losing their third consecutive national title to an SEC team. Well...there's always the Citrus Bowl.
  • This coming weekend, Georgia Tech hosts Florida State and Virginia hosts Miami in two games that will go a very long way towards deciding who goes to the ACC Title game as well as shaking out the ACC Bowl picture. I like both Florida schools in that one.
  • Six non-BCS teams and Minnesota are all positioned above the ACC's 2nd highest rated team.
  • Dear Arizona State, Please stop sucking. Sincerely, Georgia Fans.

ESPN's Story on the Richt Family

While I'm catching up from the weekend and unpacking, enjoy this piece from ESPN College Gameday on the Richt family. We're very luck to have their family as part of the Dawg Nation.

Very lucky.
