Yesterday was a good day for those searching for proof that God loves others the same way he does Tim Tebow: South Carolina picks up the first points in the Fulmer Cup. Also, the media's Tebowmania came crashing down in a cavalcade of cliches why Tim Tebow might be a super good dude, but he is a left-handed version of Byron Leftwich. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Byron might not be as medically talented as Tebow, but he does have a couple of cool rides.
Tennessee football. I think that is all I have to say about that, right?
There are few things I love more than Schadenfreude, if for no other reason than feeling superior to South Carolina/Tennessee fans and wearing ascots at parties and saying Schadenfreude. Schadenfreude.

Random Thoughts on the Cocktail Party
Watching our special teams play was like watching a teenage cutter holding a box of Wusthofs. It was sad and gross to watch, yet the plot line would make a pretty decent Lifetime Movie with Meredith Baxter playing the role of Coach Richt. It was enough to make me miss Jon Fabris...a little.
But we won. And that's all that matters. After 17 trips to Jacksonville, I can tell you I've seen us play way smarter and lose.
And why did we win? Because the defense, which was a rolling shipment of fail last year, simply got dramatically better. The result -- If you have a few minutes to enjoy a cold beer and warm schadenfreude, read these Gator recaps from Orson Swindle and Run Home Jack over at EDSBS:
However, without Charlie's offensive reputation, there's the cold reality that the Gators' head coach is just a loudmouth ex-UGA player who is now 0-5 in Jacksonville.
And by the way ... going for it on 4th and 19 is an absolutely, positively stupid call. It doesn't matter that it worked. It's still such a galactically stupid call as to bring your entire thought process into question. Assuming there was a thought process to begin with.

Bruce Pearl to Receive a Show Cause?
Andy Katz at ESPN is reporting it. His former assistants will each get one year, with Pearl getting a multiple year show cause.
In all likelihood, this is the end of Pearl's collegiate coaching career. His assistants might get another shot, but it'll be a while. They'll be like the plague for a number of years, but guys that can recruit as well as Jones won't be out of the game forever, even if it means working the Ohio Valley Conference.
NCAA is sending the message. Don't lie to us.

GT goes down over $312
I remember UGA basketball fans saying, "I can't believe we got in all of this trouble over a $300 payment to Tony Cole and a bogus PE class."
My retort to all of those Harrick apologists at the time was pretty simple. It wasn't the violation that killed us. It was the moment where Jim Harrick allegedly told Chris Daniels and Reshad Wright to lie to the investigators about the PE class that got us slaughtered.
There's nothing worse than a cover up to the NCAA. That's why Bruce Pearl was fired at UT. It's why Jim Harrick was fired at UCLA. It's why Jim Tressel isn't at Ohio State, and it's why Georgia Tech is no longer the ACC Champion from the 2009 season.
As for GT fans who think the punishment is too harsh....Thomas caught a 70 yard TD pass on a 1 play drive in a game decided by five points in which he should've been sitting down pending the outcome of his investigation. Even UNC had the good sense to sit their guys when the NCAA started snooping around.
Read the report sometime. It's amazing how inept their cover up attempt was.
That said...all those who think DRad is a bad AD because this happened on his watch, I present an alternate theory. Any AD who can keep an NCAA investigation a secret for over 20 months is running a tighter ship than most. It also helps to have a hometown newspaper completely and totally asleep at the wheel.
Georgia fans get three days of articles on the transfer of Brent Benedict and a full article on the assistant recruiting coordinator (a guy I had never heard of) leaving while GT is going through an investigation in two sports without a peep.
Amazing.

Auburn's Issues Sound Familiar
As you no doubt know by now, HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumble will air a report tonight that puts at least 4 Auburn players on record as having received payment from Auburn and other schools. SportsByBrooks has transcripts from the TV show, and an updated article with more color about Auburn's potential next steps.
Clearly there is blood in the water.
Before you watch tonight's broadcast, I highly recommend watching this 60 Minutes Special from 1991 regarding Eric Ramsey's tapes. Those tapes lead to Auburn being banned from TV and Bowls in 1993 as they proved Ramsey was paid to play football at Auburn. The entire pay for performance program described in this video sounds fairly similar to the upcoming HBO story.
Remember -- none of this has anything to do with Cam Newton. Except that a lot of people who hate Auburn are looking for a reason to kick the hell out of the Tigers. If they can't bust them for CamGate, they'll bust them for something else.
Here is what I believe to be true:

And it's even more clear that certain other members of the SEC have passed the tipping point in their tolerance for Auburn's shenanigans.
So the question is simple. Will the NCAA finally attempt to cripple that infrastructure? Because it's not about Cam Newton now. It's way past that.

- 1. Auburn was alleged to have paid kids up to $1,000 per month during the 1989 season and prior. They were also put on probation for violations of that exact nature. Many of the same boosters referenced in that 60 Minutes video are still around the AU program.
2. $1k/month is obviously $12k a year. If you would give a kid $12k a year for up to 4 years in '89, then giving a kid $50k up front in 2010 isn't tough to put your head around. It's actually a good deal by comparison.
3. It's not the easiest thing in the world to give someone $50k in cash. To move that sort of money around...as was alleged by Mississippi State in regards to Newton ...takes a proven infrastructure. People don't just that kind of cash to kids without knowing for damn sure that it'll land in the right spot AND that their risk of being implicated (barring a confession) is minimal.
4. You can't logically expect that an alumni group powerful and successful enough to invest $150k or more in a single player wouldn't protect that investment with additional investments of $25k-50k in ultra high quality players to surround him.
5. If Newton's dad thought he could get $180k from AU, there's no way he stopped asking after the first bidder said no.
6. If Newton's dad had asked for only $50k, Mississippi State would've been the 2010 SEC Champs and Gene Chizik's tenure in Auburn would be on life support.

Bruce Pearl Fined $1.5 million by UT
Bruce Pearl fined by UT for providing misleading information to the NCAAs. More important to UGA basketball fans, Pearl will be banned from off campus recruiting for a period of 1 year beginning Sept. 24th.
UPDATE: The Vols assistants are being taken off the road as well!
Hamilton also reduced each of Pearl's assistant coaches' salaries by 25 percent. Beginning Sept. 24, assistant coach Jason Shay will not be permitted to recruit off campus for three months, associate head coach Tony Jones will be prohibited from off-campus recruiting for nine months and assistant Steve Forbes will be prohibited from off-campus recruiting for a year.As Bulldog in Exile said, Hamilton had to make an example out of somebody to save his own ass. And unfortunately for Bruce Pearl's (and his crocodile tears), it's the basketball coach.

Suck it Nerds. Dawgs Win!
I love college basketball. I love Georgia, and I love winning. God Bless America. Georgia defeated Tech 73-66 in basketball tonight. The Jackets and Paul Hewitt were grossly out coached by Mark Fox, and the Bulldog players played as well as possible in the victory.
Tech probably has four or more NBA players on their roster, and we...well...don't. But we have a coach now. And we don't lose to Tech in Athens. Period.
As a friend texted me post-game. "Dear Dave Braine and Mark Carmony. Thanks for Hewitt's contract." Tech will owe Hewitt $5-6 million if they terminate him, and they don't have that sort of cheese laying around.
This was a big win for Coach Fox. He needed to show that the program has life in it. That we can play entertaining basketball again. That we can build a winner here. Tonight was directionally what the program needs to move forward and put the ugly past six years slowly into the rear view mirror.
Buy a ticket. Come watch the team. There will be nights on the road in SEC play where we look lost and confused (like the Missouri game on Saturday), but there's also going to be nights in Athens where much more talented teams will tumble just like Tech.
Why? Because we're well coach, and we play a smart brand of basketball that's fun to watch. Get to Athens and give 'em a chance.

Spurrier's Nightmare Continues

However, the depth of ineptitude really is staggering from the game. Consider:
- 10 Play 5 Yard Drive - How exactly do you manage to work so cover such little real estate.
- 4th and Dumb - Spurrier turned the ball over on downs after going for it on 4th and 1 from his own 32 yard line. Your offensive line is a mess without a position coach, and you go for it on your own 32? UConn got an easy FG after that.

Is the ACC Championship even a real thing?
Exiting Bobby Dodd Stadium at Mark Richt Field, I couldn't help but wonder if the ACC Championship is even real. It's beginning to feel like a marketing ploy on par with New Coke, Amway or Suffrage*.
Seriously, if no one goes to the game and no one watches on TV doesn't that put the entire tree falling in the woods theory to the test? Have you ever seen the ACC Championship fooball trophy? Have you ever met anyone who has attended the event?
Me either.
Being King of the Dipshits means you're still a dipshit. If there were ever a less purposeful gathering of overhyped fail than you'll find in Tampa this coming weekend, I can't name it.

Dawgs rock APR rankings. Tech loses scholarships
I will write this using short sentences so the Tech basketball team can feel included in the discussion. UGA good. Tech bad.
The academic progress scores were released by the NCAA yesterday. Georgia football and women's basketball APR scores lead the SEC in their respective sports. Tech's men's basketball team scored below the required minimum and lost two scholarships.
BTW -- If a kid leaves school early for the draft or transfers out in good academic standing, his departure doesn't hurt your APR. The argument of "we put people into the NBA" really has nothing to do with why Tech's scores are so poor. They use the negative connotation of UGA as a "football factory" to justify our long term success and their long term failures on the gridiron. In basketball, the shoe is clearly on the other foot.

Stay Classy, Gainesville: Miami Edition
Received via third-hand email: "My friend saw this girl squatting near his tailgate for the [national championship] game [Thursday] night and thought she was just pissing until she stood up and came over to talk to them. That's when they noticed..."
Update: Yeah...we had our fun. So I killed the pic. I feel a little bad that her sorority letters make it pretty easy to figure out who she is. I didn't notice that originally. Dawgnoxious blacked out the face to protect her ID a bit. But hell, she's wearing her letters.
I'm pretty sure that dropping your gators off at the pool while rocking your sorority letters will put you in deep doo doo. So I feel a little bad about it. As for the question of was it a bad call to post the pic originally...I'd say the real bad call was consuming that last beer. I had my fun. I'm moving on. I still say that potty humor regarding Gators is within this blog's core business, but the extremely large version of the pic was probably a bit much on the graphic side. -- PWD

The Enemy of My Enemy ...
The bowl season for the SEC gets underway today with Vandy and LSU playing their respective bowl games against ACC opponents. The bowl season always seems to bring up an eternal debate: to cheer for the other members of your conference or to cheer the defeat of your rivals? Most Southerners choose the former, whether out of a sense of regional solidarity or conference pride.
It is tempting to toe the conference line. After all, you want the people you beat and the teams that beat you to look as strong as possible. This, the argument goes, reflects well on you. You beat the strong and the stronger beat you. Any team from another conference with a similar record would not have fared as well if they had to play your schedule of heavyweights. To me, this argument makes no sense.
If Florida wins the BCS Bowl, how exactly, does that in any way help Georgia? How does it help us if any SEC team wins their bowl game? These are the teams we compete with for talent and resources. A win for a rival isn't good for us, it's good for them. There is no reflective glory in college football. Do you think UPS wishes FedEx well? No way. Why should we cheer for South Carolina or Alabama or any other SEC or ACC team?
There is an exception this year. LSU. Geaux Tigers.

Gene Chizik on the move from Iowa State to Auburn:
"Through my travels in coaching over the last 23 years, there's one place that I've always wanted to return to and that is Auburn," Chizik said.
