SEC Hoops Opener

In case you haven't noticed (and judging by the numbers at Stegeman, you haven't...badabing!), Fox's Hounds have finished the pre-SEC schedule at 9-5. Breaking down the schedule, there is little rhyme or reason to the wins or the losses.

On the plus side, we have wins over RPI #64(?!?) South Dakota State, as well as Notre Dame, which is currently RPI#128 and USC, currently RPI#126. Both ND and USC will rise once they get into their conference schedules. On the negative side, we've lost games to #109 Cincinatti and #161 Georgia Tech (both RPIs there will move up, too). More damning, we've played very inconsistent basketball. We imploded against Tech, nearly did so against Deleware State and Winthrop, and haven't had any consistent full game offensive efforts yet. Our maddening propensity to go on 5-7 minute scoring droughts in the second half continues. In short, we've got a long way to go or the NIT is a mere pipe dream.

The upside is there are pieces that can come together. Caldwell-Pope is getting stronger, is becoming more of an explosive scoring threat, and is leading the team in scoring. Gerald Robinson is showing improvement in pass/shot selection. Marcus Thornton and Donte Williams are both getting better at going after the ball in rebound situations and showing more awareness when they get offensive rebounds.

Right now, Coach Fox's team is raw. We foul too much, take too many bad shots, rotate to cover the low post too slowly and lose our composure at times. I had hoped the non-conference schedule would work out some of the rawness and only time will tell if it has. Either way, the SEC schedule is here. Looking forward, I think the Dawgs have to have 9+ SEC wins, at a minimum, to have a legit NCAA shot, unless a couple of the non-conf wins or losses become substantially better.

Can we do that? Sure, if we play much better and smarter basketball. Fox's offensive is predicated on ball control and good shot selection. We have the ability to make any game a 63-59 type deal. I like our chances in those games.

Dawgs get their first shot at the SEC against a very good Alabama (11-3) team tomorrow night at 7pm. Coverage is on FSN.

Hoops Schedule Update

ESPN today announced the semi-final pairings for the CBE Classic. Georgia will face California and Missouri will face Notre Dame in Kansas City on Nov. 21st. Win or lose, the Dawgs will play on Nov. 22nd in either the championship or consolation game.

Cal finished the season with an RPI of 76. It's a good neutral site match-up...especially compared to facing Missouri in a near home game. As we've said before, the UGA basketball schedule is much more ambitious than our talent level would suggest we can handle without Travis and Trey. At least, we'll be battle tested by the time the SEC schedule rolls around.

UPDATE: Rumblings on the scheduled game time for Xavier are Nov. 25. If that's true, we're looking at a stretch of games that includes (via MemphisDog):

Georgia Basketball Schedule Update

Sicemdawgs.com listed four non-conference games added to the schedule. Originally, we had heard that the first two games of the CBE Tourney in Athens might be against Niagara and William & Mary. However, we're now hearing that George Washington will be one of the CBE Teams destined for Athens (ht - MemphisDog).

Interestingly, there's an outside chance for a terrific Georgia sports weekend Nov. 11th. We open the weekend and the season with a home basketball game against Wofford. Then we get Auburn at home on Saturday. Potentially, we'd get another basketball game on Sunday at home in the CBE Tourney. It's a long shot, but possible.

The information above is based on published reports or research by MemphisDog or myself. If the unconfirmed dates and opponents hold up, it's an exceptional slate for a couple of reasons.

1. Overall Strength -- Due to the bracket structure in Orlando, we will play 3 BCS teams there plus GT, Colorado and a Top 25 or so Xavier team. Six teams of that caliber in one season is exceptionally strong scheduling. When you add UAB at home, Saint Louis on the road and Mercer on the road (which softens the RPI blow of playing their squad), it's a very well structured group.

2. Weekend Non-Conference Games -- Last year was tough in terms of weekend scheduling. This year we get 4 games on Friday or Saturday at home plus 4 more games on the road/neutral on weekends or holidays. That makes it much easier to beef up attendance which is huge for the renovated Stegeman's seating.

3. It's an attention getter slate. -- There's more than enough juice to get pollster and pundit attention IF Georgia takes care of business. Last year, UGA got two games on ESPN or ESPN2 plus two more on ESPNU. This year I'm projecting 10-12 games on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU including SEC Play which is enormous for recruiting.

We're also hearing that the first SEC game will be Kentucky at home on a Saturday (hopefully at night). It's not unreasonable that we could be 11-2 going into that game, and the Cats lost seven players from last year's squad. Even if they replaced them all with rock stars, it will still be their first game on the road in SEC play.

This schedule presents an enormous opportunity for Georgia. The keys to next season will be can the team stay healthy? Can the team mentally mature enough to start winning on the road? Is Gerald Robinson as good as rumored?

The SEC slate should be released in a week or two.

More Hoops Scheduling Rumors

Via the comments from earlier in the week, we're hearing rumblings of a possible game in Athens against Marshall. Last season the Thundering Herd's RPI was 67th and they went 11-6 in CUSA (including their league tournament). It's a decent RPI filler game.

On the other hand, Georgia will play Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 12th to open the season. This is the Friday Night before the Auburn road game. MVSU had an RPI of roughly eleventy billion (ok...325th out of 347th). They play an up tempo style, but they stink.

As a point of reference our buddy ScenicCityDawg pointed out that former Dawg Drazen Zlovaric rained down 16 points of awesomeness on these guys two years ago in Athens as part of a 41 point victory. Uhh....that was 35% of his total points over his two year UGA career.

It's not an ideal RPI match-up, but it's Game 1, and everyone plays a few of these bottom feeders.

UGA vs. Notre Dame Scheduling News

Sorry for the tease. It's hoops...not football. As previously, announced Georgia basketball will play in the Old Spice Classic in Orlando during Thanksgiving break (Thurs, Friday and Sunday). The question had been...which of the 8 teams will the Dawgs face in those three games?

Thomas Noie of the South Bend Tribute says that UGA will open play on Thursday against Notre Dame (2010 RPI of 49th). If the brackets hold up, he says the winner gets Cal (20th ranked RPI) and then potentially Temple (8th ranked RPI). Wisconsin (21st ranked RPI), Boston College (125th ranked RPI, Texas A&M (13th ranked RPI) and Manhattan (226th ranked RPI) are also slated to appear in the tourney. As long as UGA wins the first game against ND, it should get three pretty strong RPI games in Orlando. The only bad scenario is a first round loss followed by a weak RPI game against Manhattan.

Rumors:
In other hoops scheduling news and rumors, we're hearing that Georgia's road trip to Saint Louis to play Rick Majerus' squad may take place on Saturday, Nov. 20th. This is a bye week for Georgia football, and the Atlanta Falcons will play the Rams on Sunday, Nov. 21st. This isn't confirmed yet, but MemphisDog has it on good authority.

We're also hearing that UGA has one more home game to fill before the schedule is announced. The Dawgs are looking for a quality opponent to fill that last spot. Currently the slate of known games are:

In Case You Missed It....like I did

I didn't see the recap from Mark Richt and Mark Fox's visit to the Macon Bulldog club yesterday morning. David Hale wrote a couple of detailed recaps. The piece in the Macon Telegraph focused on the basketball team, and the article on his blog covered both coaches.

One thing I found interesting about the articles was Coach Fox's comment that he's having more trouble this year than last year building a schedule because teams know we're going to be tougher.

I know Miami Hurricane's coach Frank Haith said a few weeks ago that he was trying to book UGA, Auburn or South Carolina for a home and home series. I also know Nevada, Colorado and Southern Cal are schools with quite a bit of scheduling flexibility that are looking for games.

The 2010-2011 hoops schedule should be pretty intriguing. So far, we only know about GT (Away), Saint Louis (Away), UAB (home) and the three games in Orlando for Thanksgiving.

Fox Still Targeting UNC series

Coach Fox last year was notoriously tight lipped about things in and around the program. Particularly when it came to scheduling. That's why it's so curious to me that he's openly discussing the possibility of playing UNC in some sort of home and home series starting next year. Maybe it's because it's recruiting season.

I know Roy Williams was going to throw former UNC alum Jeff Lebo a bone and come to Auburn to open the 2010-2011 season and the Tigers' new arena. I would assume that series is off with Lebo's termination. Maybe that's why the interest from the Tarheels? That and everyone wants more exposure in front of Georgia high school basketball players.

Getting the Heels in Athens next year with a newly renovated arena and *on paper* our best team in 6-7 years would be pretty exciting.

Marc Weiszer's article also indirectly confirms that there won't be a game at Gwinnett this year. That's not a shocker given the attendance in last year's game against Illinois.

Basketball Schedule Rumors

Looks like UGA is looking for as many as two more BCS caliber home games and two more BCS caliber road games for the upcoming 2010-2011 season. This is according to a message board post by our director of football operation on Basketball Travelers, a site where coaches and assistant athletic directors can exchange scheduling opportunities with each other.

"We are looking for H & H series for 2010-2011 with BCS schools. Looking for 2 @ home and 2 on the road."

The site is one of several craigstlist.org type sites for arranging b-ball rendezvous.

If you add four more BCS-level games to the mix, that would really look impressive. While we're asking for 4 games (2 home and 2 away), I'd wager that we'd settle for three (2 home and 1 away). I'm also guessing...and it's just a guess...that we wouldn't go back to Gwinnett next season IF we could land the other games being asked for.

That's the schedule for a team that doesn't just want to make the NCAA Tourney. It's the schedule for a team that wants a great seed. If Trey bails on us, I'd expect to see that schedule soften up.

Then again...all BCS teams aren't created equal. If we ended up with Nebraska, DePaul, Penn State and Iowa as the four teams, it wouldn't exactly terrify anyone.

Ranking the Difficulty of Remaining B-ball Games

To have any shot whatsoever at any post-season tourney including the NIT, CBI or CIT, would require a winning record which means winning at least 16 games. In reality, we'd need 17 wins to lock us in somewhere, but 16 would at least get us into the mix.

The Bulldogs were 8-5 through the non-conference schedule. The most realistic options for making it to 16 wins are:

There are other scenarios, but they are much less reasonable. With that in mind, here's my shot at ranking the difficulty of the remaining 12 SEC Regular Season Games.

Just remember that every time we lose a game against a team with an easier degree of difficulty, we have to make up that win against a team with a tougher degree of difficulty.

One piece of minor good news...we only play two more road weekend games this season. In the SEC, the weekend crowds are much larger and tougher. It's not a big thing, but it's a little helpful. The bad news...we've only won 2 road games in the past three seasons.

In case you were wondering, we'd probably need 10 SEC wins plus two SEC tourney wins to make the NCAA Tourney, and we're a long way from talking about that. The next two games at Florida on Wednesday and at South Carolina on Saturday are big opportunities. Particularly, the game vs. the Chickens.

Hoops: The Importance of the Ole Miss Game

Preseason I listed the Top 5 most important games for Coach Fox this year as (copied and pasted from the original article):

1. Georgia Tech (home) - I'm pretty sure that we haven't lost to Tech at home since 1976 (The series returned to campus in the mid-90s). Tech is loaded, but you still can't lose to them at home.

2. Alabama (home) - There's a segment of the fan base that will always compare Fox to Anthony Grant. This is a big game for perception.

3. Ole Miss (home) - The first SEC home game. The students will be back on campus, and there's a chance to give them a big show in a winnable game.

4. Florida (home) - I think this is the last SEC home game before the students go on Spring Break. More importantly, it looks like the highest profile winnable game on the schedule. There's an opportunity to show momentum and improvement by picking up a big win against the Gators at home.

5. New Orleans (home) - You never get a second chance to make a first impression.

So far, we're 2-0 against these 5 games. If I had to do that list over, I would put Ole Miss at #2. I had no idea the Rebels would be ranked as high as #21 coming into the game. The Illinois and Georgia Tech wins combined with the gritty showing in Lexington have caused some fans to finally give the team a look. Win and we start to finally get a little momentum and credibility within the fan base beyond the nut jobs and hard core types like me.

Lose...and it's tough to see where many wins come on the schedule until February. By the way, the SEC schedule maker deserves a kick in the balls for making us play 4 of our first six games away from Athens against 5 of the Top 6 teams in the league. Thanks for nothing.

We should have a pretty solid crowd on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm (SEC Network). Ole Miss is beatable. We just have to take it, and it's going to take a great crowd to help get us there.

Basketball Scheduling News

Georgia has been invited to play in the 2010 Old Spice Classic played Thanksgiving Weekend at Disney's Wide World of Sports® Complex.

The event will feature 12 games through three days, Nov. 25, 26 and 28, 2010. The tourney guarantees each team three games, and it features:

The tournament is owned by ESPN, and it appears that all games will be televised by ESPNU or ESPN2. This is a good event for Coach Fox. Now, we just need some zone busting wings.

UGA Announces Full Basketball Schedule

Georgia and the SEC released the men's basketball schedule today. All 16 of Georgia's SEC games will be televised. David Ching had the TV Schedule up first.

MemphisDog and I ended up being right on all the non-conference games by the time all was said and done. Really, we had the 12 of 13 right a month or so ago. But enough of slapping myself on the back. Here are some thoughts on the schedule:

The Positives:

It's a big boy schedule -- I'd wager that less than 10 teams will play five BCS Conference members without participating in a pre-season tournament. Georgia has road games against Missouri, Virginia Tech and St. John's (Big East Challenge in Madison Square Garden). Plus, a neutral site game in Gwinnett vs. Illinois, and a home game against Tech. 15 of 29 teams played in the post-season last year. We'll know more about Fox's scheduling habits next year as only Saint Louis, UAB, Georgia Tech and Hawaii are on the books for 2010-2011.

The Schedule Builds -- November is a build up to December which builds towards the insanity of January. There is a chance for the team to build up their confidence before facing the January gauntlet of SEC play plus at Missouri and vs. GT.

Home Games on Friday Night before Football -- We face North Georgia in an exhibition on Friday, Nov. 6th. That's the day before the Tennessee Tech game. The season opener is against New Orleans on Nov. 13th the day before we face Auburn.

The Negatives:

The best games are Away from Steg -- This is mostly Felton's fault. He knew we had Illinois at Gwinnett and an away game for the Big East Challenge this year. But he still booked games at Virginia Tech and at Missouri. I expect Fox to even the lumpiness of our scheduling out in the future.

UAB nutty timing -- It's inexplicable that we're playing at UAB on a football Saturday. No one will watch that game, and I can't imagine it'll be televised. More than being disappointed with Fox on this, I'm baffled that Mike Davis at UAB could be so stupid to blow a home game like that.

Overall, the five biggest games are:

More Hoops Schedule News

Update: We confirmed the scheduled teams today. We expect the schedule to be announced in about 2 weeks or less. I don't have all the exact dates, but I do know the teams. San Diego was a bogus rumor, but Wofford wasn't. Hell...12 of 13 ain't too shabby.

UGA is confirmed to host Pepperdine in Athens on Dec. 30th (ht - MemphisDog). Pepperdine had an RPI of 276 last year; however, they should be better in Year 2 under coach Tom Asbury. Speaking of Asbury, he's the connection to Fox on this game. Asbury was the head coach at Kansas State from '94-'00 while Fox was his assistant coach.

Hoops Schedule Rumors

The list of known and rumored games for the 2009-2010 basketball schedule continues to grow as MemphisDog sniffs out the quality rumors. He's the star of "CSI: UGA Hoops Schedule."

Because of his prowling, we have a few more games that fall into the quality rumors category. The current list is below.

Illinois at Gwinnett Arena (confirmed)That's directionally closer to what Harrick would put together when he was here. Certainly tougher than anything Felton, Jirsa or Durham put together. Don't sleep on Saint Louis or San Diego. SLU is coached by Rick Majerus, and San Diego beat Kentucky in Rupp Arena two years ago.

If those last three rumors hold up, that means there's only 2 more games out there. I've heard that part of the hold up in getting the hoops schedule out is the SEC. The new TV contracts that ESPN just signed with Fox Sports South and CSS on behalf of the SEC means that the b-ball schedule probably isn't as far along at the league office as you might expect.

Basketball Schedule: UGA to play UAB

The Georgia men's basketball schedule continues to evolve as the Birmingham News reports that UAB is set to begin a home and home with Georgia starting in the upcoming 2009-2010 season. The first game will be played at Bartow Arena, and the second game will be played in 2010-2011 at Stegeman Coliseum.

The Blazers will play Georgia, Virginia, Cincy and Butler in 2009 along with their regular CUSA slate. They are consistently in the RPI 50-100 range so this is a quality mid-major game without being a Ben Hur game.

Hoops Schedule: UGA vs. UNC-Asheville

More of Mark Fox's schedule is beginning to take shape for the 2009-2010 Georgia Basketball season. The latest mid-major addition is the UNC-Asheville Bulldogs at home on Tuesday, Nov. 24th at 7:00 pm. (ht - macdaddy)

UNC-Asheville went 15-16 overall on the season last year and finished with an RPI of 200. This year, they return 4 of their top 5 scorers and 4 of their top 5 rebounders. The #1 guy in both categories appears to be gone.

They will have played Tennessee and Charlotte before our game so they should have their act together when they roll into Athens. Incidentally, they face Kentucky after us. Those four games combined with returning the bulk of their talent should give them an RPI in the 150-200 range next year.

Also, Coach Ed Biedenbach of UNC-Asheville was an assistant coach at Georgia for Hugh Durham from 1981-1989.

You won't find many SEC or ACC schools playing five BCS schools in a year. In fact, last year Kentucky lead all SEC and ACC teams by playing six non-conference BCS conference members. Most SEC and ACC schools played 2-4 such opponents. UGA faced four of them.

Plus, rumblings indicate that one or two quality mid-majors (RPI 50-100 caliber programs) will still be added to the slate. It'll be a manageable schedule that the computers will like. The trick to basketball scheduling is to avoid the sub-300 RPI teams that Felton booked extensively.

I still think it's an NIT team at best, but that would definitely be an improvement over all but 4 days of the past two years.
