Miami DC departs for Oklahoma State

According to the Miami Herald, Defensive coordinator Bill Young has left the University of Miami to join his alma mater, Oklahoma State. Miami head coach Randy Shannon did not tip his hand regarding potential replacements. The Herald quotes him as saying: "I will be looking for the best possible defensive coordinator to replace him. If that candidate is not out there, those responsibilities will fall to me."

Randy had better get a move on if he doesn't want to double up as his own defensive coordinator, because he still has not replaced offensive coordinator Patrick Nix.

According to the AJC, Mark Richt's spokesman said Miami had not requested permission to speak with Willie Martinez.

Who has two thumbs and no comment?

Exploding Assistant Salaries and Auburn

I know the attention today is on Tennessee and Rodney Garner. If the Vols were alone in their desperation fueled spending spree, it's one thing. It's another thing when broke ass Auburn jumps in, too.

This week, Auburn hired Curtis Luper as running backs coach. As a stand alone press release, the Tigers hiring a position coach away from Oklahoma State would be a big "ho-hum." However, the Birmingham News reports that Luper's salary will jump from $228,000 to $400,000.

$400,000 for a running backs coach? Great googly moogly. There isn't an assistant coach in Athens making that kind of scratch. That hire more than the wacky Orgeron $650k or Kiffin Sr $1.2 million signals to me that everyone is about to get P-A-I-D.

Also, the same B-ham News article reports that Auburn and Miami are interviewing Trooper Taylor. Taylor is currently the co-offensive coordinator for the high-flying Oklahoma State Cowboys. He's best known in these parts for being an ace recruiter and RB/WR coach for the Vols. It'll be interesting to see where he lands.

Update: Charles Goldberg has more info.

It's LSUFreek's Internet. We just surf it

LSUFreek does the Photoshop work for Orson Swindle's EDSBS. This week, he is absolutely on fire with the Chizik news. His work is here:
Dear Al Gore,

Thanks for the Internet.

Finebaum calls Auburn AD "a buffoon"

Paul Finebaum is clearly enjoying the hell out of the Auburn coaching search. Always a man known for working in subtle nuance and hidden word play, Finebaum dropped the following on his readers yesterday:
If Jay Jacobs hasn't secured the No. 1 spot among the biggest buffoons in college athletics, it's only because a new poll hasn't been taken since the announcement of Tuberville's firing.

The first week of the search looks like the early auditions for "American Idol" with candidates running through the door in droves, falling over themselves and playing the fool.
Not sure if you caught all that sub-text, but he doesn't seem impressed. The Auburn search rolls on with no apparent strategy or end game in mind. The single most qualified, available coach in America is the one they just fired. Tough to search around that problem.
